    The Application for Travel Document is for people who wish to re-enter the U.S. after a temporary international trip.

    WHO SHOULD APPLY

  • Permanent Residents who will be outside the U.S. for one year or more;
  • Individuals who need permission to travel while their Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) is being processed;
  • Asylees and Refugees who are asking to travel.

    • APPLICATION FOR A TRAVEL DOCUMENT (RE-ENTRY PERMIT)

  • Applications must be filed in the U.S.
  • Permanent Residents must appear for a biometrics appointment before leaving the country. The applicant may leave the U.S. after the biometrics exam and collect the travel document at a U.S. Consulate or DHS office overseas.
  • The applicant may choose to stay in the U.S. until the application is approved. (Processing times vary from three to six months.)
  • Re-entry Permits are valid for two years and are not renewable.
  • The applicant may return to the U.S. to file a new application.
  • A Permanent Resident may spend up to six years abroad and maintain a Re-entry Permit.
  • A more extended absence requires an application for a Special Immigrant ("returning resident") visa.

    • APPLICATIONS FOR ADVANCE PAROLE

  • Applications may be filed simultaneously as Form I-485 (Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status).
  • The Application for Advance Parole is filed with the same Service Center as Form I-485.
  • Applicants must wait for their application to be approved before leaving the U.S. (Processing times vary from three to six months).
  • The document is valid for one year and must be renewed for travel outside the validity of the initial document.

    • APPLICATIONS FOR A REFUGEE TRAVEL DOCUMENT

  • Applications must be filed in the U.S.
  • The applicant may leave the U.S. before the application is approved and collect the travel document at a U.S. Consulate or DHS office overseas.
  • The applicant may choose to stay in the U.S. until the application is approved. (Processing times vary from three to six months).
  • The document is valid for one year and must be renewed for travel outside the validity of the initial document.
